第15页:寄卖店的捡漏机会

  • The other thing that a lot of people don’t consider is sales likelast call at Neiman Marcus, Saks has something similar. A lotof these department stores have fabulous pieces that you canlayer into your wardrobe. They would be totally attention-getting. You don’t want to spend a huge amount on them, butby the time they are in the last call, they are marked downthree or four times and then they’re 50% off of that, so you arereally getting a great piece for a total fraction of the cost.
  • Another option, of course, my favorite option since I own oneconsignment boutique, is going to consignment shops. It’sanother tricky thing because there are a lot of different types ofconsignment shops. Some are specializing on clothing, uhh,you know, you have to go for the genre of the clothing thatyou like to wear, uhh, our store specializes more oncontemporary looks. We go for one of kilt things, the seasonwas very big on dresses, but there are other consignment shopsthat were more conservative, which, if it’s your thing, great!

第16页:警惕寄卖店价格陷阱

  • One caution about that though. Watch out for the prices.Because, again, in these consignment stores, sometimes theprices there are a lot higher for something that’s one ortwo years old, than it would be if you went and got somethingat last call at Nieman’s or a Saks thing. You would be endingup paying more for an older item. So just know it.
  • Also, get to know somebody at the stores that you like to shopin because they will clue you in about when the sales are goingto happen and they will also pull items for you and hold themuntil they can ring them up and that’s called pre-sell. So keepall that in mind before you go.

第23页:知识扩展:工厂直销店购物

Part Seven: Additional Know-how Outlet Shopping 工厂直销店购物

第24页:天天五折的购物体验

  • Imagine shopping in a place where most items are 50percent off every day of the week. As many bargain huntersknow this is no dream, it’s called a factory outlet.
  • What are factory outlets and what do they offer? Factoryoutlets are where big brands offload stock at a fraction of itsnormal value. In U.S., many states have outlet malls or factoryoutlets. Outlet centers, factory stores, and outlet malls all dealwith major manufacturers trying to move stock. There aremany reasons for this. For example, a retailer ships inventoryto an outlet store because it isn’t moving fast enoughelsewhere or is general overstock. Companies also shift oldstock to prepare for seasonal or industry changes. Whenretailers and manufacturers have gone out of business, theytransfer inventory for resale at an outlet.

第25页:正价商品与样品次品

  • Most outlets offer both normal stock and also samples and seconds. The stock is usually as good as new and retailers are required to informyou why an item is damaged. Usually, they can be products which havebeen slightly damaged or improperly made but are still good enough to besold, just not at a prime retailer. Or, they are products never sold, perhapsfor a reason, so rather than throwing them away; manufacturers breathelife into the products one more time through outlet sales.
  • With all considered, one expects to save a lot when shopping in outlets. What kind of savings can one expect? Usually consumers can get from 50to 70 percent off most major brands. For example, a pair of Sass & Bidejeans that costs $180 is available for $49 at an outlet while Gap whitecotton turtleneck, which costs $16.50 for retail, is $3.99 here; BananaRepublic women's Irish linen shirt, $88 retail, $29.99 here and many BabyGap and Gap Kids items, up to $54 for retail, only cost $5 here.

第26页:便宜背后的理性提醒

While the merchandise seems like a steal with such good pricesand reasons, one has to remember that the bottom line is thatcompanies still want to make a profit, so not everything is goingto be slashed to the rock bottom price all the time. There are stillstages of sales cycles to go through, even when outlet shopping. So checking out what normal retail pricing is before hitting anoutlet can help you decide if one item is a real windfall or not.Additionally, if the item isn’t on your “usual” shopping list, theoutlet price still may not be a bargain. If you normally wouldn’tpay $600 for a designer bag, buying it for that price at an outletcenter, even though it says with “50% off”, doesn’t make it adeal.
